Understanding Each Other
Listening, being open to differences, and being willing to revise viewpoints: it touches the core of how people live together, form relationships, and collectively give meaning to the world. Are we open to one another? Is there room for dialogue and to speak freely? Everyone wants to be heard. People seek truth and shared meaning; they strive for sincerity. Feeling solidarity is essential for human coexistence. Connection only truly arises when we want to understand each other. The reality, however, is that understanding each other requires a sense of security and moments free from power. Is that an act of resistance? Or is understanding each other primarily an ideal? (Freely adapted from Jurgen Habermas’ Theory of Communicative Action.)
Understanding Each Other in 14 images!
This photo series by Martien Heeremans explores what ‘understanding each other’ means to us. What is required to be able to understand each other? What is required to want to understand each other? And what does it mean if we do not, or do not want to, understand each other? Why is it that, despite the desire to understand each other, we often hear ‘the apostles’ speaking only in our own language?
